8th Annual
Gene Cerise Memorial
Country Coast
Classic Bike Ride
June 21, 2008

Supporting the youth of Cambria is what this ride is all about. Since its inception seven years ago, this has been a volunteer-driven event, with proceeds benefiting Cambria teens through the support of a teen community center. The tradition continues with this year's ride, in partnership with the San Luis Obispo County YMCA - which now operates and coordinates programming for the Cambria Teen Center. Our look may be a bit different, but the volunteers and heart of this event are still about helping kids in Cambria. Please join us in building strong kids for our community.
About This Ride:
This ride offers a great day of cycling fun along some of the most scenic coastline and hills in California. Beat the heat and enjoy the cool air and great scenery of the California Central Coast. Registration includes well-stocked rest stops, experienced SAG, delicious BBQ, and raffle ticket.
Enjoy any of three great rides (Click for more info):
The History of the Gene Cerise Memorial
Country Coast Classic Bike Ride
Gene Cerise was an avid cyclist and youth enthusiast, who loved
Cambria and the Central Coast. In 2001 he organized the first “Country Coast Classic Bike Ride” as a fund-raiser for the Cambria Youth Center. Gene succumbed to leukemia in 2004 but his legacy continues. A team
of committed volunteers are now at work planning for the 8th annual Gene Cerise Memorial Country Coast Classic Bike Ride in support of the youth of Cambria through support of the San Luis Obispo County YMCA Cambria Teen Center. See you there!
YMCA Cambria Teen Center
The YMCA operates a drop-in after-school & Saturday program for teenagers, grades
6th through High School, in the Cambria area during the school year and summer time.
Teens, grades 6th through High School, may use this Center for no cost. The Teen Center is funded by many local charity non-profit agencies and events (i.e. Lions Club, Country Coast Classic Bike Ride, Cambria Mayor's Race, & Rotary Club). The YMCA administers the program and provides professionally trained staff to work with the teenagers. The YMCA’s staff are all professionally trained and certified in basic and pediatric CPR and First Aid. Additionally each undergoes a background fingerprint check through the advanced state Livescan system. The Teen Center is located at 870 Main Street.
2008 Country Coast Classic Bike Ride Goal
Our goal is that this ride will raise $10,000 to support the Cambria Teen Center after event expenses. All proceeds, after event expenses, will go to support the Center.

Ride Details:
A challenging ride into the wine country and then up the north coast, the Country Coast Classic Century is for experienced riders who are confident of their conditioning. The ride leaves Cambria heading south on Highway 1, and then proceeds east on Highway 46 into the Paso Robles/Templeton wine country. The eastbound ride on Highway 46 includes a climb to a 1762 foot summit, with most of the climb occurring in the last 5 miles of 6% gradient. Once over the top, the riders lose about 1000 feet of elevation before leaving Highway 46 for a 10 mile loop on quiet 2 lane roads in the wine country. Then it’s back over Highway 46, including 5 miles of uninterrupted downhill, and back to Cambria for lunch. There are two rest stops along this route.
After lunch, the riders head north on Highway 1, past San Simeon, Hearst Castle and the elephant seal rookery to a turnaround at Ragged Point. Then it’s back to Cambria, usually with a fair breeze at your back, for the barbecue. There are also two rest stops along this route.
Ride leaves from staging area at Shamel Park
Start time is 7:00 am.

This is an intermediate ride along the north coast with unparalleled views and a bit of a challenging climb at the half way point. Riders leave Cambria heading north on Highway 1 past San Simeon, Hearst castle and the elephant seal rookery. There is a rest stop just north of the rookery. Riders proceed north to a second rest stop and turnaround point at Ragged Point. There is a moderate climb for the last mile of the northbound ride, which, of course, becomes a nice downhill run after turning south for the ride back to Cambria and the barbecue. Ride leaves from staging area at Shamel Park.
Start time is 8:00 am.

- Short Ride (25 miles)
This is a great option for families with kids, or those who haven’t been on the bike since the previous summer. The ride is fun, short and sweet, with no big climbs to worry about. There are some ups and downs, but this isn’t Kansas Auntie Em! If your goal is 25 to 30 miles, then head north on Highway 1 to a turnaround at the elephant seal rookery rest stop. If 15 miles seems enough for one day, then head north on Highway 1 to a turnaround at Hearst Castle. Either way, the view is magnificent, and the end of ride barbecue will be awaiting your return. Ride leaves from staging area at Shamel Park. Start time is 9:30 am.
