Under the guidance of Sensei Louis Garcia (named Sensei of the Year 2008), students of the San Luis Obispo County YMCA Dojo practice the fundamentals of Shotokan Karate. The San Luis Obispo County YMCA Dojo was also named Dojo of the Year 2008 by the Funakoshi Karate Association (FSKA) - presented by Shihan Kenneth Funakoshi, decendent of the founder of Karate, Gichin Funakoshi.
Shotokan Karate is one of the four main schools of Karate in Japan. It is best characterized by its long and deep stances and its use of more linear movements.
Shotokan Karate has little of the circular movements found in other karate styles.
This martial arts based workout will teach the basic stances, covers, kicks and punches of Kempo Karate. Kenpo places equal emphasis on the use of hands and feet and uses similar fighting techniques to other Okinawan fighting styles. Kenpo also practices Kata or forms like other martial arts. Whereas most Karate styles use white gis (uniforms) throughout, a visual characteristic of Kenpo is its use of black Gis for higher grades and even the mixing of black Gi tops with white pants and vice versa.
Kickboxing - A workout that combines aerobics, cardiovascular and body tonning while learning self-defense tactics.
Meditation - Learn and practice techniques to quiet the mind and body. Medical research reveals that regular practice of meditation produces a number of mental and physical changes related to successful living and aging. Hiking Trails In SLO County
San Luis Obispo County has many great places you can take
an easy walk or challenge yourself
with a hard hike.
For over 50 years,
the San Luis Obispo County YMCA
has worked diligently to offer
programs that improve the lives of
members of the communities it
serves.
Massage is another way the YMCA
improves each person by
rejuvenating the spirit, mind, and
body for a total health experience.
Massage is an incredible
way to add relaxation to your
everyday busy lifestyle, increase
blood circulation, offer relief from
muscle aches and pain, and
enhance energy levels.
Swedish: Best choice for relaxation and
reducing blood pressure. Consists of long
flowing strokes ranging from very light to fairly
deep using oil. Compressions, stretching or
gentle rocking movements may also be used.
Minimal clothing suggested. Draping is required.
Sport /Deep Tissue Massage: Designed to deal with specific body
discomfort., this work focuses on the areas of
complaint: neck, shoulders, back, hips, etc.,
with the goal of releasing restrictions or
“knots” in the muscles. The techniques used
rarely require lubricants; as a result, the work
is usually done through clothing. Gym attire
is preferred.
Chair Massage:
A great way to get quick treatment on your back,
neck and shoulders.
Couples Hands-On Massage Class:
Hands-on classes teach you how to help your
partner relieve tension, back pain and
headaches. Clients will learn techniques over
clothing.
