The above application is applicable for any volunteer working for the San Luis Obispo County YMCA. That includes volunteer coaches, counselors, and community workers. If you'd like to fill it out, you can fax or mail it to the YMCA. Our fax number is (805) 543-6202.

Meet Phil
For the past six months, the Kids Gym Program has enjoyed the volunteer work of Phil Strahl. Once a week Phil joins the Healthy Kids Club group in playing sports games, making crafts and providing positive leadership. “I enjoying interacting with the kids and the enrichment the kids bring to my life,” said Phil regarding his volunteer experience at the YMCA. Phil has lived in SLO County since 1985, taking a brief respite to live in the Bay Area for 10 years. When not volunteering with the kids, Phil works at a garden nursery in downtown SLO, enjoys golfing and exploring SLO County.
Volunteer Opportunities
Annual Support Campaign Volunteers

Storytellers
Read or perform stories for preschool/primary school aged children during a new program to start this fall.
Dance Instructors
Variety of styles needed for a new YMCA program for beginning dancers starting this fall.
Fun Family Night Volunteers
Family Fun Nights are offered one Friday evening each month from 5:30PM – 7:30PM.

YMCA Board Appoints President & Directors, 2009

The San Luis Obispo County YMCA celebrates the appointment of this year’s new Board of Directors and installation of its new president, Laura Murphy, to lead the Y in building stronger kids, families and communities.
An active and respected member in the community, with an extensive background of volunteer work, Laura Murphy works in Employee Benefit Sales at Morris & Garritano in San Luis Obispo. “We’re excited to support, promote and empower the YMCA in all its endeavors,” Murphy said. "I'm honored to serve as this year's Chairperson, alongside some of San Luis Obispo County's most talented volunteers & YMCA staff. We are ready to meet this year's challenges and opportunities, and hope to create a long term vision for our future. I invite the community to become a part of this wonderful organization."
Murphy is joined by a number of volunteers on the YMCA Executive Committee and Board of Directors. Henry Lane, of San Luis Obispo, serves as the YMCA’s treasurer and finance chair, Ray Johnson, former Mayor of Atascadero and city resident, is the immediate past president. Wayne Lewis, owner of Lewis Financial and Avila Beach resident, is board secretary. Ron Yukelson, of San Luis Obispo, chairs the Marketing Committee and works as the Business Development Director for Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center. Mandy Leastman of Founders Bank, is Fund Development Chair, and Fire Chief John Callahan for San Luis Obispo, will chair the San Luis Obispo City Advisory Committee.
Eight new directors were also appointed to the YMCA Board to provide leadership and build a better understanding of the YMCA’s mission throughout the community. San Luis Obispo residents: Chad Engleskirger of Cannon and Associates; Cal Poly Professor, Dr. Robert Flores; Eric Alexander, a Cal Poly Program Director; Attorney June McIvor of Sinsheimer, Juhnke, Lebens & McIvor; Controller On Call, Lisa Gonzalez; and Ray Ried from Performance Technology, as well as Realtor Cindy Blankenburg of Arroyo Grande, and retired Cal Poly Professor, Jim Battersby from Pismo Beach.
Other directors include Jim Guthrie, Arroyo Grande City Councilman and General Manager of the Spyglass Inn; Jim Gall of J.P. Gall Insurance of San Luis Obispo; Keith Godfrey, of Autoquest Information Systems of San Luis Obispo; student and Youth & Government participant, Kelly Main of San Luis Obispo; Jonathan Lowell, attorney for the City of San Luis Obispo; John Shoals of RRM Design in San Luis Obispo and Mayor of Grover Beach; County Supervisor Jim Patterson, of Atascadero and Ali Semon, of the Frame Works in San Luis Obispo.
