This event is due to the tireless efforts and generosity of Chester Gibbs.  If not for his vision and financial support, the first fun run would be just an idea.  Instead we are now celebrating the third annual Mary Gibbs Memorial Fun Run and Walk.

Chester is a long-time friend and employee of the San Luis Obispo County YMCA. For over 15 years, he and his late wife Mary, came to reflect the essence  of what community means at the YMCA. Mary, at Chester's side, spent many years as a volunteer with the Y and touched people's hearts in many ways. Mary's legacy is what we might all hope for ourselves, that the essence of who we are lives on through others.  She is with us in our hearts are we celebrate her legacy with this run, thanks to Chester's generosity.

Please come be a part of it, and join our community at the YMCA.

Join us for a fun Summertime Potluck and Pep Rally as we get ready to kick-off the Mary Gibbs Memorial Fun Run/Walk. Bring your favorite dish to share and come enjoy the company.
Dana Cummings, an amputee surfer and tri-athlete, will share some inspirational words that “anyone, no matter what, can ‘still do’, and do more.”

About Dana:

"My motto is - Still Do

I grew up in rural Maine in a little town called East Livermore and served six years in the Marine Corps, serving in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. I graduated from Thomas College in Waterville, Maine in 1999 with a Bachelor's Degree in Software Engineering.

I am 38 years old, a single father of three, and engaged to be married in October to a wonderful woman named Rebecca.

I lost my leg 5 1/2 years ago on August 9, 2002 due to injuries sustained in a automobile accident. After being laid up for a few weeks I decided that I had to make a choice, either I could let this destroy me, or make me stronger. I chose the latter and started setting goals for what I wanted to do now that I was an amputee.

Since losing my left leg I have done a half Iron Man with the challenged Athletes Foundation, and participated in various other triathlons. I have learned to surf (4 months after losing my leg), competed, and qualified for the U.S. Western Region championships for surfing in 2004. Surfing, wake-boarding, water-skiing, rock climbing, wind surfing, and soccer are all sports I have participated in since losing my leg that I did not do before losing it.

I have worked as a missionary, in Tanzania, Africa helping to build schools and teach computers to the local population.

Currently I am the Executive Director for the Association of Amputee Surfers. We have put together six clinics this year to teach those with disabilities the healing joy of surfing. To learn more visit our site at www.ampsurf.com.

I guess I feel anyone no matter what can "still do", and do more. You just have to want it. Most everyone has the ability they just need the desire, and help in getting started. I lost my leg not my life, and I realize that God has given me a very precious gift. It is not the gift of life, but the awareness of how precious life is. I don't want to waste a moment of my time. I want to experience everything that is out there in the world. We only get one shot at it here, I plan on giving it my best effort."

- Dana Cummings
